Exhaustion

When your energy is no longer enough.

When you no longer have the energy you used to, both everyday life and the way you see yourself can change. Prolonged strain and too little recovery may contribute, but the difficulties can have several causes. We map your situation and explore what needs to change so that you can have more energy and room to act.

Responsible for content: Andreas Lundin, psychologist licensed in Sweden.

There may be several causes

The strain may come from work, caring for others, relationships, financial worries, demands you place on yourself or several parts of life at once. Sometimes the life situation is the main cause. In other cases, the strain interacts with, for example, worry, rumination, depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, trauma or physical illness.

Tiredness, physical symptoms and changes in memory or concentration can also have medical causes. A medical assessment may therefore need to take place alongside our work. The perspectives do not compete with one another. We need to understand what is happening in your body, what your life situation is like and which psychological processes may contribute to or keep the difficulties going.

Recovery is more than rest

Rest can be important when demands have been high, but recovery may also require changes in workload, responsibilities, boundaries, sleep or other parts of everyday life. What needs to change differs from person to person.

If worry, rumination, anxiety, low mood or negative patterns of thinking take up a lot of space, we also need to explore how this affects your energy and recovery. When memory, concentration or the ability to plan changes, it can feel both threatening and unfamiliar. We map how this shows itself for you and what may need to be eased, changed or practised gradually.

How we work together

We map what has contributed to the difficulties, how everyday life is affected and what seems to keep the difficulties going. We then formulate together what you want to change and which steps could reduce the strain and give you more room to act.

I use MCT and ISTDP as different paths in the same direction. MCT can help us explore how worry, rumination and repeated attempts to control thoughts take energy or keep difficulties going. ISTDP can help us notice feelings, anxiety and ways of avoiding what becomes difficult to face. You do not need to choose a method or keep track of the method labels. I make the clinical judgement based on what we see together, and we keep track of whether the work is helping you move in the direction you want.

Privately or through your employer

You can book privately or have your sessions funded by your employer. If your employer pays, we agree on the arrangements before the sessions begin, and the invoice can be addressed to the company. Professional confidentiality still applies, and I do not pass on what you tell me without your approval.

If the sessions are arranged through an insurance company, an intermediary or occupational health services, their terms may govern, for example, the number of sessions, booking, cancellation and invoicing. We go through what applies before we begin.

Common questions

Can my employer pay for the sessions?

Yes. Ask HR, your manager or the person responsible for occupational health whether your employer can fund the sessions directly or through insurance. By agreement, the invoice can be addressed to the company. Professional confidentiality still applies, and I do not pass on what you tell me without your approval. If contact is through an intermediary, their terms may govern, for example, the number of sessions, booking and invoicing.

Do I need to be on sick leave to book sessions?

No. You can book whether you are working, on sick leave or returning to work. Sick leave is a medical matter assessed by a doctor. In the sessions, we explore how everyday life and work are affected, what has contributed to the difficulties and what could support your recovery.

How many sessions are needed?

That depends on what you want help with, what we identify together as keeping the difficulties going and how the work develops. Early on, we make a rough plan, which we review and adjust as we go. It is always you who decides whether you want to continue. If someone else funds the sessions, the agreement may govern how many are included.
