Difficulties with memory and concentration

When memory and concentration are not working as usual.

Changes in memory or concentration can cause both frustration and worry. The difficulties can show themselves in different ways and have several causes. Here you can read about when a medical assessment is important and when psychological sessions may form part of the next step.

When thinking feels less accessible

It can become harder to stay focused, remember something you were just thinking about, find words or plan and keep tasks together. For some people, thinking also feels slower than usual.

When something that used to happen automatically takes more effort, it can feel unfamiliar. We begin with your description of how the difficulties show themselves in everyday life.

Similar difficulties can have different causes

Sleep difficulties, prolonged strain, worry and low mood can affect concentration and memory. The difficulties may also be connected with physical illness, medication or hormonal changes, for example during the menopause.

What feels like a memory problem can sometimes also be a matter of attention not being available at the moment the information was to be taken in. This is one possibility among several, not a conclusion we draw in advance.

The cause cannot be established solely from how the difficulties show themselves. What matters is when they began, how they have developed and how everyday life is affected. A medical assessment may be needed and can take place alongside psychological sessions.

When to contact healthcare

Contact a primary care centre if memory difficulties do not improve after rest and recovery, recur, increase or affect everyday life. It is also wise to seek care if someone close to you has noticed a clear change.

A doctor can assess whether the difficulties need to be investigated and whether, for example, illness or medication may be contributing. You do not need to know what is causing the change before contacting healthcare.

Call 112 if you or someone close to you suddenly becomes very confused or has difficulty speaking, understanding, seeing or moving an arm or a leg.

When sessions can be part of the next step

If sleep difficulties, prolonged strain, worry or low mood are part of the picture, psychological sessions may be relevant. We explore how everyday life is affected and what you want help with. I do not assume that the difficulties have any particular cause.

The work may involve recovery, changes in everyday life or psychological processes that take attention and energy. Sessions can take place alongside medical assessment or treatment. If you are unsure, you can book a free introductory phone call or write to me before booking therapy.

Common questions

When should memory or concentration difficulties be assessed by healthcare professionals?

Contact a primary care centre if the difficulties do not improve after rest and recovery, recur, increase or affect everyday life. It is also wise to seek care if someone close to you has noticed a clear change. Call 112 for sudden marked confusion or other sudden symptoms such as difficulty speaking, understanding, seeing or moving an arm or a leg.

Can psychological sessions help with memory and concentration difficulties?

Sessions may be relevant if, for example, sleep difficulties, prolonged strain, worry or low mood are part of the picture. We then explore what takes energy or attention and what can be changed or eased. Sessions can take place alongside medical assessment or treatment.

Can the sessions take place online?

Yes. Sessions of 30 and 50 minutes can take place at the practice or online through Kaddio’s video service, which does not require any download. A longer video session of 90 minutes costs SEK 2,000 and can be booked directly in the calendar. If you would like a longer or individually arranged session at the practice, get in touch and we will agree on the arrangements and fee before the session. The introductory call lasts 15 minutes and takes place by phone. If logging in or using the chat becomes relevant, I will give you instructions about the next step.
