Three motifs. One at a time.
Explore the wave’s different sides.
Stay with the same wave. Point the torch towards colour, depth and movement in turn. Then try taking them in together.

What happens when
you see the interplay?
I often describe attention as a torch. What you point it towards stands out more clearly in your experience and can stir thoughts and feelings. When you move your attention, other parts of what is happening can have more room.
Here you stay with one motif. You might notice the wave’s colours, then its depth, then its movement. When you widen the beam, several properties can be present at once. How does the colour relate to the depth? What happens to the shape as it moves?
Together, the parts can form something that is hard to notice when you follow them one at a time. Where the rings overlap, for instance, new patterns appear. See what you notice yourself.
Directing, shifting and dividing attention are part of the Attention Training Technique, ATT, within MCT. The standard training format uses simultaneous sounds. Here you explore attention through different properties of a visual motif.
All the properties are present throughout the exercise. When you choose ‘Divide’, the image continues as before. What you can try changing is how you attend to it. The wave, the stream and the rings each have their own guide.
There is no result to achieve. The study cannot tell where your attention is. It is a visual illustration of the principles and has not been tested as a treatment.
